(CIVIL RIGHTS.) The Crisis Calendar for 1921.

(CIVIL RIGHTS.) The Crisis Calendar for 1921. [12] leaves, 11¼ x 8¼ inches, plus decorative cover with photographic image laid down, string-bound at top edge; minimal wear. New York, [1920]

  • Notes: "The Crisis: A Record of the Darker Races," the official journal of the NAACP, issued an annual calendar from at least 1915 to 1922. This edition's monthly calendar pages each feature an inspiring passage by a noted author of African descent: Frederick Douglass, Charles Chesnutt, Booker T. Washington, James Weldon Johnson, Jessie Fauset, Afro-European authors Alexander Pushkin and Alexander Dumas, and more. The closing words are from Crisis editor W.E.B. Du Bois, a passage titled "The Immortal Child" from his recent book Darkwater.

The cover image is a portrait of an old man in rough clothing; we do not know his identity. The February 1921 issue of "The Crisis" credits the photograph to Cornelius Battey, whose work frequently appeared in the magazine.

Not many of the early Crisis Calendars survive. At auction, we find only an incomplete 1917 edition sold as part of a group lot in 2014. Only one appears in OCLC (also a 1921 calendar, held at Yale).
