(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Thoughts and Directions for Churchmen Participating in the CORE Demonstration.

(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Thoughts and Directions for Churchmen Participating in the CORE Demonstration. 3 mimeograph pages, 11 x 8 1/2 inches; bound with a staple, minimal wear. Chester, PA, 21 May 1965

  • Notes: The majority-Black Philadelphia suburb of Chester was the scene of protests in 1964 over school desegregation. This is a planning document for a Congress of Racial Equality protest the following year over the city's heavy-handed urban redevelopment plan. It offers safety tips for protestors: maintain a buddy system, avoid engaging with counter-protesters, and of course "adopt the techniques of Non-Violence."

Coverage in the next day's Delaware County Daily Times reported approximately 40 peaceful protesters, including about 15 religious leaders who had arrived as a group from nearby Swarthmore. Picket signs included "Urban Renewal but not Negro Removal" and "Don't Make 4,000 Negroes Homeless." The article mentions that this "Thoughts and Directions" packet was distributed by the Rev. Layton Zimmer of the Episcopal Church. None traced in OCLC or elsewhere.
