(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Wallace, George. Two Typed Letters Signed and one Photo Signed. Letters each one page, 4to; one on Governor's Office letterhead, the other on Troy State University letterhead. Photo is in 10x8 inch format and shows Wallace at a football game. Alabama, 1964-91
-
Notes: Wallace, best known in the 1960s for his rigid anti-integration stance veiled under the states rights banner, did a complete about face and today is widely respected by the African-American population of his state.
In the first letter on the Governor's letterhead he replies to a fellow states right[ist]; the seond letter is addressed to Currie Ballard, Professor-in-Residence at Langston University, relating his record on hiring and advancing Blacks during his administrations, and closing with the results of a poll which showed that he was more popular with Black Alabamans than white Alabamans.
