- Notes: first and only edition. rare. In October of 1919, feeling that they were not receiving a fair share for their work, the black sharecroppers of Elaine, Arkansas, held a meeting at their church to organize and join the Progressive Farmers and Household Union. Two armed whites came to harass the black farmers and gunfire broke out. Both whites were shot and the violence spread like wild fire. Whites from adjoining states, inflamed by press reports of a Negro "insurrection," came in droves. The result was wholesale slaughter. Figures vary, but approximately 800 to 1000 black citizens were killed. The rioting lasted for 3 days. When it was over, 122 blacks were arrested on varying charges of murder and assault, 12 of them condemned to death. The NAACP sent Walter White to investigate and organized the defense. After four years of legal proceedings, rising from local and state to the Supreme Court; six of the 12 defendants who had been condemned to death were released and the remaining six received sentences of 12 years.
