The check, unknown amount to unknown recipient drawn on Springfield Marine and Fire Insurance Company. 2½x3¾ inches. Springfield, 8 February 1861 • Robert E. Lee. ALS, "Truly your father / RELee," to his son George Washington Custis Lee, sending a fine English saddle with bridle and valise [not present], requesting that he keep it safe, sending a letter for his mother including a passport for Mrs. Murdock [not present], adding that "Gen'l Hooker . . . is agitating his troops. Last friday night he attempted to burn R[ail]R[oad] bridge at Rapp[ahannoc]k Station, Orange & Alex[andri]a R[ail]R[oad]. He was driven off. . . ." 2 pages, oblong 8vo, ruled paper, written on recto and verso of single sheet; inlaid into album leaf, folds.
