(CIVIL WAR.) Army of the Potomac's "Countersign Signals" from early in the war. "General Orders No. 29." 6 printed pages plus manuscript note on final blank. 4to, 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, unbound; folds, minor wear. With oversized Office of the Signal Officer envelope addressed to officers of the 7th Maine Infantry. Washington, 17 November 1861


  • Notes: An order issued by command of General McClellan. An elaborate list of daily signs and countersigns to be exchanged by day and night using flags, flares and code words. Two words are added in manuscript, and a note on the final blank explains that "this circular is in so far confidential, that the officer receiving it, will not make its contents public, nor will he reveal them, unless in the discharge of signal duty, to others than officers actually in the service of the United States."
