Letter illustrated with appealing folk art.

Madison, MS, 13 December 1863
Autograph Letter Signed only as "Sam," to cousin Zebedee. 3 pages, 8 x 4¾ inches, on a folding sheet, with watercolor art on final blank; folds, mount remnants, moderate wear and toning.

  • Notes: The letter concludes: "We are on the move one more, and the dear good man only knows where we are going. I am well and in good spirits but can't come home. . . . It seems to be we are going to fight the Indians, and will ans direct soon." We can't find any corresponding actions against Indians or Confederates in this time or region, however.

The drawing is explained thus: "I made a speech the other day and I told the good people that when Sam was at home, he drove a good span of mules and buggy, and that he had a good nice cousin to ride along with him. . . . and a young man in a few minutes drew me a picture, and handed it to me, of my mules, buggy & [a woman] holding out her hand for me to stop."

We are not 100% sure this has anything to do with the Civil War, but it's a nice piece of folk art.
