(CIVIL WAR--BROADSIDE.) Grand Celebration in Troy . . . of the Capture of Richmond, and Lee's Whole Army!

"JOYOUS DAY, SAD ENDING" (CIVIL WAR--BROADSIDE.) Grand Celebration in Troy . . . of the Capture of Richmond, and Lee's Whole Army! Illustrated broadside, 17 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; moderate wear and foxing, several short tears, laid down on board in the 19th century; early manuscript notes on the broadside and board. Troy, OH: Miami Union, 14 April 1865

  • Notes: The 3 April capture of Richmond and the 9 April surrender of Lee's army at Appomattox signaled the imminent end of the war, and sparked celebrations across the North. The large town of Troy in western Ohio staged a day-long celebration which started with a signal gun at 4 a.m., continued with bell-ringing and music, a parade in the afternoon, and concluding with "Fire Works! General jubilation all evening!" Contemporary notes on the broadside explained how the evening closed: "10 p.m., word came, Lincoln shot. 10 p.m. message came, Lincoln was shot. Joyous day, sad ending." This broadside was part of the collection of Edwin M. Cosley (1869-1962) of Troy (see lot 203), whose signature appears on the mount. No other copies of this broadside have been traced, in OCLC or at auction.
