- Notes: Terry Beale (b. ca. 1832) was a private in the 9th Virginia Infantry regiment of the CSA army. He wrote this letter to "Dear Cattie" while defending Petersburg from a long Union siege, and expresses regret for "leaveing you all so much exposed to the insults of the ghastly foe who are plundering and destroying every thing that lies in there power making desolate the homes of thousands of women and children." Also describes the imminent execution of a deserter.
