(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) An early manuscript Confederate dispatch on Gettysburg. One page, 9 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches, docketed on verso "13th Army Corps, Rebel Despatches" and "Papers found in a house by cavalryman," signed by Brigadier General Alvin Hovey; minor foxing, small hole at fold. Np, 7 July 1863

  • Notes: Contains the text of two telegraph dispatches dated 7 July: one describing the Battle of Helena in Arkansas, and the other with news on the Battle of Gettysburg received via a flag of truce from Petersburg, which reads in part: "The Battle in Pennsylvania, Further Northern Accounts, Yankee Loss Sixty Thousand, Dan Sickles reported dead."
