(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Book of Common Prayer carried by John R. Zimmerman as Confederate soldier. 32mo, publisher's calf, worn, covers detached; several leaves detached, edge wear with some loss of text, one small cello tape repair. New York: D. Appleton, 1856, with inscriptions dated 1861-65 and 1917

  • Notes: John R. Zimmerman (1838-1926) enlisted at the outset of the war in Company A of the 17th Virginia Infantry, the Alexandria Riflemen. He was given this book of Common Prayer by his mother on his enlistment date, and carried it with him during his four years of service. He inscribed it with his itinerary, listing more than 40 locations where he had served, most of them with dates. Typical entries read: "On the battle field, Manassas, July 21 1862," "In the trenches near Suffolk, Va May 3 / 63," "Prisoner of War, Washington D.C., July 29 1863[?]," "Prisoner of War, Point Lookout Md, Sunday Aug 23 / 63," "Robinson Hospital, Richmond Va May 30 / 64," and "On picket in front of Bermuda Hundred Sunday Oct 16 / 64," with the last war-date entry reading "Appomattox April 11 / 65 Sunday, a sad day for us." The final entry is a 1917 gift inscription from Zimmerman to "Dolly."
