- Notes: Confederate infantry and artillery officers wore a crimson sash around their waist. This sash, more than 11 feet long, has been in the Polk family since General Polk was killed by an artillery shell while scouting the Confederate position at Pine Mountain, Georgia on 14 June 1864. with--a letter of authenticity from Polk''s great-great-great-grandson testifying to its provenance.
