  • Notes: Order from Albert Sidney Johnston, to "Soldiers of the Army of the Mississippi," April 3, 1862. Contemporary manuscript copy in the hand of Assistant Adjutant General George G. Garner. Johnston's address to his troops before the battle of Shiloh: "I have put you in motion to offer battle to the invaders of your country. . . . You can but march to a decisive victory over the Agrarian Mercenaries sent to subjugate and despoil you of your liberties, property, and power. . . . You are expected to show yourselves worthy of your race and lineage." Moderate wear, silked. Corinth, MS, 3 April 1862 * General Thomas Hindman, General Orders No. 10. Contemporary manuscript copy in the hand of Captain H.A. Newman. Limits the number of employees and extra duty men in Hindman's Corps; each wagon shall have "one teamster, who shall be a Negro if possible." Dalton, GA, 18 January 1864 * General John Henry Winder, Special Order No. 48. Contemporary manuscript copy in the hand of Assistant Adjutant General James W. Pegram. Approves findings and decision of a court of inquiry into the escape of prisoners from Libby Prison. Includes details of how the escape was made via tunnel. Headquarters, Department of Henrico, Richmond, VA, 1 March 1864.
