Junius W. Fowlkes.

Letter written from the defenses of Atlanta, predicting a Confederate victory within a year.

"In the field" [northwest of Atlanta, GA], 5 June 1864
Autograph Letter signed "J.W. Fowlkes" to father Paschal J. Fowlkes of Nottaway County, VA. 3 pages, 8 x 5 inches, on one folding sheet; toning, tape repairs, lacking blank portion of final leaf. With postal cover bearing partial inked postmark and Fowlkes's franking signature.

  • Notes: Junius Woodson Fowlkes (1843-1923) served in Jeffress' Company of Howitzers in the Virginia Light Artillery. This letter was written while attempting to stave off Sherman's army north of Atlanta, as part of an ongoing series of small battles between Dallas and Marietta.

"The enemy has withdrawn 3 or 4 miles of his right & extended his left, and we have moved relatively. Skirmishing is kept up all day, brisk at times & then light. It is hard to tell when a general engagement will be fought there. Probably not for a month, but terrific when it does occur. . . . I think we will yet fall back to the Chatahoochie River, where the great battles will probably be fought. . . . I won't complain of hardships if we can drive Sherman across the Tennessee. It is the general impression that if Lee & Johnston whip Grant & Sherman, that this is the last year of the war, but I think our successes must be marked and decisive. I am so tired of living in the woods and being pulled & ordered about like so much bone & muscle."

With--an order to report issued to Junius Fowlkes, 20 June 1862; 3 travel passes issued to father Paschal J. Fowlkes, July to December 1862; and 6 Confederate bonds issued to Paschal and Junius Fowles for amounts from $100 to $5000, all issued 1864.
