(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Pair of documents of an exiled Confederate artilleryman serving in the Mexican army. Each about 8 x 4 inches, moderate wear. Matamoros, Mexico, 1866

  • Notes: Allan A. Brinsmade (1831-1910) was one of the very few men born in Hawaii to serve in the Confederate army; he reached the rank of lieutenant in Louisiana''s Washington Light Artillery Battery. After the Civil War, along with many other Confederates, he went into exile in Mexico, and served for a short period as a captain in the liberal Mexican army just across the border from Texas, then trying to repel the French incursion. These two documents relate to Brinsmade''s Mexican army service. The first is a Letter Signed in English from General José María Jesús Carbajal or Carvajal, Matamoros, 13 July 1866: "You will forthwith take command of the artillery at the fort called ''de Colegio'' and place the guns in order." The second is a pass issued to Captain Brinsmade to travel from Matamoros across the Rio Grande to Brownsville, TX, 19 September 1866, signed by Servando Canales (for whom the Matamoros airport is still named). By 1870, Brinsmade had returned to the United States and was a bookkeeper in Houston, TX. See also lot 159.
