(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Resolution for secession by the citizens of Mobile.

(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Resolution for secession by the citizens of Mobile. Early manuscript transcript, [2] pages plus integral blank. Folio, 12 1/2 x 8 inches; minor wear; docketed on final blank "Memorial of citizens of Mobile in favor of the secession of the state of Alabama from the Union." Mobile, AL, copy circa 1870 made from the 1861 original

  • Notes: This petition was drafted in response to the 24 February 1861 call for an Alabama secession convention, and was originally signed by a long list of Mobile citizens. It resolves that "the election of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency upon the principles avowed by the Black Republican Party is in our opinion a virtual overthrow of the Constitution and of the equal rights of the state," and that Alabama "should withdraw from the Federal Union for her own honor, safety and protection." This transcript gives 23 of their names and adds "and a long list of others, the original of which is now in keeping of Probate Judge Horton, of which this is a true extract." It is signed in another hand by Deputy U.S. Marshal Watson. Gustavus Horton served as judge of Mobile's probate court from 1867 to 1873. The original text of this petition appears to be unpublished.
