(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Ryall, Walter. Letter from a Tennessee soldier on Stonewall Jackson's Romney Campaign. Autograph Letter Signed to father Thomas C. Ryall. 2 pages, 9 3/4 x 8 inches, on one sheet; folds, minor toning. With envelope bearing Winchester VA postmark. (MRS) Morgan County, WV, 10 January 1862

  • Notes: Walter Sims Ryall (1841-1914) of Shelbyville, TN was a private in Feild's 1st Tennessee Infantry in the Confederate army. In the first days of 1862, his regiment participated in Stonewall Jackson's Romney Campaign, disrupting Union rail and canal routes through remote areas of northern Virginia. Ryall writes: "We reached the neighborhood of Bath on the 3rd inst. Our advance guard had a slight skirmish with the enemies picket. They killed one or two and captured 8 prisoners. The Yankees only wounded two of our calvarymen. The next morning we advanced on the town. Our regt was given the right wing, the post of honor and danger, as all the enemies artillery were on that side. Our cavalry and advance guard were fired at several times, but as we advanced in force they retreated. . . . Our object was, I suppose, to destroy the bridges and break down the dams, to cut off supplies from Washington. . . . We suffered a good deal on this march. We were out two nights without a single blanket while the snow was on the ground four or five inches deep." Provenance: Siegel's Manuscript Society sale, 28 May 1994, lot 3257, to the consignor.
