(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Steele, Abner Newton. An Alabama lieutenant's account of Seven Pines.

(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Steele, Abner Newton. An Alabama lieutenant's account of Seven Pines. Autograph Letter Signed to wife Ellen Caroline Steele of Plum, Tuscaloosa County, AL. 2 pages, 9 x 5 1/2 inches, on one sheet; minimal wear, written somewhat faintly in pencil. With original envelope bearing Richmond postmark. Richmond, VA, 2 June 1862

  • Notes: Steele was a Mexican War veteran who served in the 11th Alabama Infantry. A short but stirring letter written in the fatigue of the day after battle: "We have had and are yet agoing to have a bloody time of it. Both sides are determined on victory or death. . . . The bullets came thick by me for some time but I was not scratched. . . . I am in good health & spirits. I feel like I will come through safe." When a soldier writes with this level of confidence, we can guess what comes next. Lieutenant Steele was dead within the month at the Battle of Frasier's Farm.
