(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Taylor, Richard. Telegram regarding Union movements along the Mississippi. Manuscript telegram on printed blank of the Southern Telegraph Companies, sent to General Beauregard in Richmond, VA, 4 x 8 1/4 inches; torn in left margin, docketed on verso. Meridian, MS, 31 January 1865

  • Notes: Richard Taylor (1826-1879) was the son of the late president Zachary Taylor. He was then a Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army, commanding the Army of the Tennessee as it moved toward the Carolinas to meet Sherman''s rampaging Union army. Here he offers a report on the movement of his own artillery, as well as observations on Union troops headed down the Mississippi: "All artillery going east of Columbus for Montgomery by steamer on 24th & 25th instant. Reports from Miss. River scouts state eight boats loaded with troops went down river from Memphis on night of 26th."
