(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Wallpaper issue of the Feliciana Democrat, a rural Louisiana publication still under Confederate control.

(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Wallpaper issue of the Feliciana Democrat, a rural Louisiana publication still under Confederate control. Broadside newspaper, 10 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches, printed on wallpaper; creased, worn, lacking upper left corner with some loss to masthead; early subscriber's name penciled in upper margin. Clinton, LA, 23 December 1864

  • Notes: This newspaper had been published by pro-slavery editor George Wilson Reese since 1855. By late 1864, the Mississippi River was firmly under Union control, but this small town about 30 miles north of Baton Rouge was apparently not under occupation.

Features telegraphic reports on Sherman's march, and of the Confederate resolution which authorized the recruitment of slaves to work on military fortifications. Also advertises an estate sale of a local blacksmith's property, including "Negro man Orange, a good blacksmith" and "Minie, striker and good field hand." Chronicling America records only 3 extant war-date issues of the Feliciana Democrat, and none of this 23 December 1864 issue.
