(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Yeatman, Henry Clay. Letter to Alexander Hamilton Polk on the Battle of Chickamauga.

(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Yeatman, Henry Clay. Letter to Alexander Hamilton Polk on the Battle of Chickamauga. Autograph Letter Signed, 10 pages on 5 leaves; poor condition, with fraying on edges, some ink burns and separations at folds, last leaf in 3 fragments and lacking perhaps a quarter of the leaf. Atlanta, 7 October 1863

  • Notes: Lt. Col. Henry Clay Yeatman (1831-1910) was an aide-de-camp to General Leonidas Polk during the Civil War. On 20 September 1863, the second day of the Battle of Chickamauga, Commanding General Braxton Bragg had ordered Polk''s right wing to attack the Yankees at dawn. Here Yeatman explains to Polk''s son the complicated chain of communication failures that caused this attack to be delayed. After the battle, this failure was used by Bragg as an excuse to discredit and transfer Polk, which is why the details would have been of such interest to Polk''s son.
This letter includes a rough sketch of Polk''s divisions on page 7. However, Yeatman promised to "try to send to you a sketch of the ground" to give more detail. The related sketch is offered as lot 98 below.
