Theodore C. Glazier.

Soldier's letter expressing enthusiasm for the Emancipation Proclamation.

Alexandria, VA, 23 September 1862
Autograph Letter Signed "Theodore C.G." to his brother Parson. 4 manuscript pages, 8 x 5 inches, on one folding sheet of illustrated regimental letterhead; mailing folds, light toning.

  • Notes: Theodore Caswell Glazier (1837-1874) was a Trinity College graduate who ran an academy in Hartford before enlisting as a corporal in the 19th Connecticut Infantry. This letter was written upon the regiment's first arrival in the South. He announces his location as "the tag-end of all creation, Alexandria, where it puzzles a Philadelphia lawyer to tell the houses from the pig-pens & where none but the flies & musquitoes are in for Union."

Regarding the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been announced in preliminary form the day before, Glazier writes: "I've just been reading the President's Proclamation, & I wish it had been issued 6 months ago. I think there would have been no need of this last call of men, or at least that the rebellion would have been nearer its end than it is. Any way, it's a good document & will act in my opinion as a settler of their (the rebels') hash more energetically than anything we've seen emanate from Washington for some time."

Glazier's support for emancipation was later manifested in his service as major of the 45th U.S. Colored Troops.
