(CIVIL WAR--DELAWARE.) Union Forever! Lockwood Legion! . . . Good Active Men Wanted.

(CIVIL WAR--DELAWARE.) Union Forever! Lockwood Legion! . . . Good Active Men Wanted. Illustrated broadside, 37 1/2 x 23 1/4 inches, in blue and red; minor wear and soiling, metal mounting grommets in upper corners, laid down on linen. Not examined out of double-sided plexiglass frame. Philadelphia: King & Baird, circa late 1861

  • Notes: An attractive recruitment broadside, illustrated with a Union zouave about to run a hapless rebel through with his sword. The Lockwood Legion merged into the 3rd Delaware Infantry before it was mustered in May 1862. This broadside promises "pay & rations to commence on signing the roll" for particularly desperate candidates, and "Good and Handsome Uniforms, and Approved Arms furnished." Most importantly, members are offered a chance "to hand a name down to posterity as a Defender of their Country''s Flag." It includes blank areas to fill in the company name and recruiting station for local recruitment use. Samuel H. Jenkins, listed here as colonel, would serve as lieutenant colonel of the mustered 3rd Delaware regiment, and then was briefly promoted to colonel in February 1863 before his honorable discharge. The regiment suffered losses at Antietam and several other battles. No other examples of this broadside have been traced at auction, and none in OCLC.
