(CIVIL WAR--IOWA.) Archive of war-related letters to the governor of Iowa and his staff.

(CIVIL WAR--IOWA.) Archive of war-related letters to the governor of Iowa and his staff. 27 manuscript letters, various sizes, no general condition issues. Vp, 1862-65

  • Notes: Most of these letters are requests for appointments, promotions, transfers, or discharges. Mary E. Bruce wrote in March 1864 that her soldier husband had not sent home any money for 8 months and pleaded to have a percentage garnished from his pay; she had three neighbors co-sign the letter in support. Oliver H. Smith wrote in December 1864 that he had been a prisoner at Andersonville "where I lost my left hand and arm below the elbow," and requests assistance in securing his discharge. These letters are addressed to Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood, his successor William J. Stone, and their adjutant general Nathaniel Bradley Baker.
