HOPING TO MAKE GENERAL JOHNSON DIVISION COMMANDER (CIVIL WAR.) JACKSON, THOMAS J. ("STONEWALL"). Autograph Letter Signed, "T.J. Jackson," to General Edward Johnson ("My dear General"), inquiring after his health, expressing eagerness that he become division commander, and encouraging him to report to duty if sufficiently well. 1 1/4 pages, 8vo, with integral blank, pale blue paper; slight fading to signature and text, some brittling and faint staining at all edges, horizontal folds, integral blank mounted to sheet trimmed to size. Np, 7 January 1863

  • Notes: ". . . I am very anxious to have you with me as a division commander, and believe that you will be promoted so soon as you report for duty.
"Are you not well enough to sit in a comfortable room, and give the necessary orders through your staff for the management of a division whilst it is in camp? . . . You know the importance of troops having permanent commanders."
In early May of 1862, Generals Jackson and Johnson led five Confederate brigades in the Battle of McDowell, resulting in a Union retreat. During the battle, Johnson was shot in the ankle and became unable to serve in the field until May of the following year, when he took command of Jackson's division after Jackson was mortally wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
