"I DON'T KNOW HOW TO BELIEVE THE REPORTS FROM THE FRONT" (CIVIL WAR.) JOHNSTON, JOSEPH EGGLESTON. Autograph Letter Signed, "J.E. Johnston," to General Braxton Bragg ("My dear General"), expressing faith in the quick recovery of his wife [who had contracted typhoid fever], offering to take over Bragg's duties so that he might attend to his wife, expressing surprise at reports that a large body of Tennessee troops have moved into [Union-controlled] Kentucky, reporting having telegraphed Richmond that they are not to expect Johnston. 1 page, 4to, ruled paper; scattered faint uneven toning, short closed separations at folds, remnants of cello tape mounting at corners verso, docketing verso. Tullahoma, 19 March 1863

  • Notes: "I was grieved to learn yesterday the cause of your absence. But trust in God for speedy improvement in Mrs. Bragg's health. In the meantime let me beg you to think of nothing but your personal affairs & duties, & to transfer whatever might interfere with them to me, & to believe in doing so, that you are accepting the services of a most sincere friend. . . .
"I don't know how to believe the reports from the front. It is impossible, I think, that any large body of troops can be going from Murfreesboro into Kentucky. The small cavalry force we have in the state can scarcely have been so exaggerated as to effect a diversion. However that may be, let me beg you to let me represent you here as far as Col: [George William] Brent is concerned--let him bring me his ordinary drudgery instead of disturbing you with it. . . ."
