(CIVIL WAR--JUDAICA.) Jacoby, M. Letter seeking information on an imprisoned Jewish sailor. 1 page, 11 x 8 inches; worn and silked on right edge with no loss of text. St. Louis, 2 June 1863

  • Notes: This letter is addressed to Capt. Pennock of the U.S. Navy, and concerns a sailor named Henry Cohen who had been arrested for a robbery on board the U.S. Gunboat Baron de Kalb. The author noted that "A friend of mine by the name of Henry Cohen is missing since nearly three years . . . I have received several letters from his parents in Europe praying to find something out about him." Jacoby''s letter was forwarded two other naval offers for response; it bears the signatures of A.M. Pennock and Admiral David Dixon Porter on verso.
