(CIVIL WAR--MAP.) Manuscript map of the siege lines at Bermuda Hundred.

(CIVIL WAR--MAP.) Manuscript map of the siege lines at Bermuda Hundred. 2 pages, 8 x 6 inches; pencil map on verso of partly-printed Confederate document; minor wear, moderate soiling to map. Near Bermuda Hundred, VA, 29 and 30 May 1864

  • Notes: A map of the siege lines at Bermuda Hundred, when Benjamin Butler's army was bottled up behind the Confederate's Howlett Line, unable to proceed up the peninsula. The map shows the locations of four cavalry regiments manning the "line of cavalry division, Gen. Kautz." Areas of standing and slashed timber are also shown. The map comes from the papers of Major Daniel S. Curtiss of the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry (see lot 99), and may be in his hand. His regiment is shown to the right of the line.
The map is drawn on verso of a partly-printed Confederate receipt which Major Curtiss likely picked up near the battlefield. In it, T.J. Harrison of the Sussex Dragoons gives bond to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the price of a saber. This partly-printed document bears a printed Virginia seal, as well as a price list for Virginia's state-issued arms and equipment. Interestingly, it is dated 20 April 1861, just six days after the fall of Fort Sumter.
