(CIVIL WAR--MARYLAND.) Pair of letters from 6th Massachusetts privates in the days after the Baltimore Riot. Each 8 x 5 inches, 4 and 3 pages; minor wear. With typed transcripts. Washington, 20 and 24 April 1861

  • Notes: George A. Spinney. Autograph Letter Signed as private in Company K, to brother. "We got along first rate till we got to Baltimore where, as we had to pass through the city . . . we was attacked by a mob. Those of the 1st companies was in cars. They smashed up the cars by bricks, paving stones, &c. We stood it as long as we could when we fired on them. . . . They murdered our regimental band, 6 in number, who unfortunately was left behind." He also describes the grandeur of camping at the Capitol building. Senate Chamber, Headquarters, Washington, DC, 20 April 1861.

    James Baxter Smith. Autograph Letter Signed as private in Company G (Worcester Light Infantry), to wife, on patriotic letterhead. "The 7th regiment from New York arrived here today. There was a great rejoicing at their arrival. . . . The northern troops will be joining in thousands now that the road is open. . . . If an attack had been made before, we should have had some fear of the results, but the results of today make us feel assured that the south cannot send sufficient force to take the Capitol. "Head Quarters of 6th Reg M.V.M." [Washington], 24 April 1861.
