The Soldiers' Guide to Health [wrapper title].

Philadelphia: George G. Evans, 1862
ii, 30 pages. 12mo, 5¾ x 3¾ inches, original illustrated wrappers, minor wear and foxing.

  • Notes: Most of this pamphlet is devoted to 94 "rules for preserving the health of the soldier, and hints on camp life." The first 40 are borrowed without attribution from an 1861 Sanitary Commission pamphlet, "Rules for Preserving the Health of the Soldier." Some others are adapted from Le Grand's "Military Hand Book."

Most of the rules seem to have aged well: avoid sleeping in wet clothes, keep hair and beards short to avoid vermin, wash underwear once a week whether it needs it or not. Rule 27 recommends "amusements, sports, and gymnastic exercises" when possible, including cricket, baseball, and football. In the rear are an illustrated advertisement for an abdominal supporter; tips on "how to get a furlough or discharge," and a closing ad for a bronze medallion of General McClellan, "Our Second Washington"--also illustrated on the front wrapper.

We trace no other examples of this pamphlet in OCLC or at auction. We find only scant mention in contemporary newspapers. The Louisville Weekly Journal ran advertisements for it in January and February 1863, stating that agents were wanted and the price was 10 cents or "25 cents for the finer edition." This copy lists the price as: "Mailed free on the receipt of two red stamps."
