(CIVIL WAR--MUSIC.) Lambert, Louis [Patrick Gilmore]. When Johnny Comes Marching Home.

FIRST EDITION (CIVIL WAR--MUSIC.) Lambert, Louis [Patrick Gilmore]. When Johnny Comes Marching Home. 5 pages on 3 detached leaves, 13 1/4 x 10 inches; moderate foxing, partial inscription on title page dated 1864. Boston: Henry Tolman, 1863

  • Notes: first edition of the best-known song of the Civil War, matching all of the points set out in Fuld, page 640. The lyricist Patrick Gilmore was a renowned bandleader and served as Bandmaster General during the war; he apparently adapted the melody from an earlier drinking song called "Johnny Fill Up the Bowl."
