(CIVIL WAR--NAVY.) Goldsborough, John Rodgers. A naval captain discusses Farragut and the attempt on Port Hudson. Autograph Letter Signed as "John," to wife in Mount Holly, NJ. 13 pages, 7 3/4 x 5 inches, on 4 sheets; repaired separation along one fold, otherwise clean and crisp. With stamped cover. U.S.S. Colorado off Mobile, AL, April 1863

  • Notes: John Rodgers Goldsborough (1808-1877) was captain of the screw frigate USS Colorado then blockading Mobile Bay. He reached the rank of Commodore after the war. This long letter is full of naval politics, and includes this discussion of the naval attempt on Port Hudson: "The news of our failure to pass Port Hudson will have been published in the papers. I presume now that Farragut will give it up until we can get iron clads in the river. . . . The loss of the steamer Mississippi together with the killed & wounded is to be deeply deplored and the failure was anticipated by Farragut without iron clads before he undertook it, but the department, I learned, urged him on. . . . Farragut now is completely cut off from all assistance both from the Navy and Army and at anchor between Port Hudson and Vicksburgh. Run back he must, and having the tide of the Mississippi in his favor will I presume select a favorable time some dark and foggy night."
