(CIVIL WAR--NAVY.) Jouett, James E. Letter regarding his capture of a rebel blockade runner--and his fair share of the prize money. Letter Signed as Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy to Francis H. Upton of New York. 2 pages, 12 1/2 x 8 inches, on on folding sheet, versos blank; minimal wear. U.S.S. Metacomet, off Mobile, AL, 16 May 1864

  • Notes: James Edward Jouett (1826-1902) was a Union naval commander known as "Fighting Jim." In July 1863, his ship the USS R.R. Cuyler captured a steamer running the blockade: "I sailed from off Mobile July 9th and off the Tortugas I chased & captured the Rebel str Kate Dale from Mobile." Jouett was promised by the prize commissioners that he was to get a 3/20 share of the sale proceeds, but 1/20 was later given to Admiral Farragut although Jouett was out of Farragut's jurisdiction at the time. Here he writes to Francis H. Upton, a private admiralty lawyer specializing in prize cases, to see if his complaint had any merit. An interesting piece of naval and legal history.
