(CIVIL WAR--NEW HAMPSHIRE.) Photograph of "Field and Line Officers of the 12th New Hampshire Reg't," with 10 related photos. Main image: Albumen photograph, 6 x 9 1/2 inches, on original printed mount; light toning and minor foxing. Smaller images: generally minor wear, three apparently removed from a scrapbook. Various places, circa 1865 and undated

  • Notes: The 12th New Hampshire Infantry was formed in Concord, NH in 1862, fought in many of the key battles of the war, and played an important role at Gettysburg. This group photograph of the regiment's officers is undated. A 2014 blog post by "Tales from the Army of the Potomac" site (http://talesfromaop.blogspot.com) states that it was taken at the James River earthworks at Chaffin's Farm near Fort Harrison, VA in December 1864 during the Siege of Petersburg. Captain Daniel Bohonon was not promoted to that rank until 12 April 1865, so the photograph may have been printed and distributed a few months after it was taken. We trace only one other example, at the New Hampshire Historical Society.

It is accompanied by 10 related photographs, all 1865 or undated: 3 cartes-de-visite and a tintype of the regiment's Lieutenant Ephraim W. Ricker of Tuftonborough, plus another unidentified tintype which appears to show Ricker in civilian dress; one unidentified carte-de-visite of a civilian taken in Concord, NH; and 4 cartes-de-visite of uniformed men from the regiment, signed and inscribed by Lieutenant Albert W. Bacheler, Captain St. Clair Smith, Lieutenant Mayhew C. Batchelder, and Commissary Sergeant George B. Lane. The cartes-de-visite were shot by a mix of camp photographers and New Hampshire studios.
