(CIVIL WAR--NEW JERSEY.) Archive of pay and recruitment records for Newark troops.

(CIVIL WAR--NEW JERSEY.) Archive of pay and recruitment records for Newark troops. 3 volumes and more than 200 documents, 0.4 linear feet. Various sizes, paginations, and conditions, but each volume around 13 x 8 inches and 80 pages. Newark, NJ, 1861-66

  • Notes: An extensive archive relating to the Civil War soldiers of Newark, filled with information on soldiers, their addresses, and their families. The first volume is a list of new recruits mustered in Newark, giving the soldier's name, address, and number of dependents ("Mother" or "Wife + 3 children"). It is arranged somewhat alphabetically. Most of the soldiers are mustered into unspecified 9-month regiments such as the 26th. At the end of the volume is a 14-page list of three-year recruits into the 13th New Jersey Infantry, titled "Names of the Recruits who Received $10 from the Citizens Committee at the Post Office."
The second volume contains similar information, but arranged chronologically. It appears to have been partly copied from the first volume, but the earlier entries are not duplicated. The entries are dated from 5 August 1862 through 1 June 1863. Most of the soldiers are mustered into the 2nd, 9th, and 13th New Jersey infantry, or into 9-month regiments.
The third volume is a cash book of the town's military expenses dated 31 August 1861 through 19 April 1862. Most the entries are for soldiers from a wide variety of regiments. The archive also contains more than 200 loose documents relating to Newark troops, most of them still folded in their original wrappers. Highlights include approximately 80 physician's certificates of children born to deceased Union soldiers, each giving the names of the parents and child, and date of birth, 1865-66; and approximately 80 bounty receipts issued to draftees who found substitutes, some listing the substitutes, 1864-65. A more detailed inventory is available upon request.
