(CIVIL WAR--NEW YORK.) [Mathew Brady.] [Engineer Company, 12th New York State Militia, Camp Anderson] (caption and credit from Metropolitan Museum of Art copy). Albumen photograph, 11 x 14½ inches, on original plain mount; slight loss in upper area of image, mat remnants in margins, other minor wear. [May 1861]

  • Notes: This militia unit was called up for three months' service at the outset of the war, and were based here in Washington's Franklin Square in May 1861. Many of its members remained in service with the 12th New York Infantry Regiment.

The young lieutenant seated furthest to the right is Francis C. Barlow (1834-1896), who rose swiftly through the officer ranks and was commissioned as a general two days after his heroic performance at Antietam in September 1862.
