(CIVIL WAR--NEW YORK.) Lunt, J.H.; recruiting officer. Recruits Wanted! For the Ellsworth 44th Regiment! Letterpress broadside, 20 x 13 1/2 inches; folds, left edge extended along margin for one inch, with parts of a few letters restored, other minor tears and repairs. Plattsburgh, NY, 29 August 1862

  • Notes: The 44th New York Infantry was a zouave unit also known as Ellsworth's Avengers, in honor of the late Colonel Elmer Ellsworth. The regiment had already taken heavy losses in the Peninsular Campaign, and was looking to recruit 300 or 400 new soldiers. As the broadside notes, "in the discharge of their duties, their ranks have been thinned, and now stand in need of brave recruits. . . . In an old regiment of this character, the new recruit is qualified for active service in one-third the time required to fit a new regiment for the field, and they offer a brother's welcome to such as come forward promptly to share their trials and their glory."
This broadside was unusually frank about the dangers involved. Any potential recruit could see from the numbers here presented that the regiment had lost a third of its men in its first year. Those odds grew even worse as the war progressed. As this broadside was being printed, the 44th was fighting at the Second Battle of Bull Run. They went on to Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg--battles that far overshadowed their earlier struggles.
