(CIVIL WAR--NEW YORK.) The Anderson Zouave.

(CIVIL WAR--NEW YORK.) The Anderson Zouave. Volume I, #1. 4 pages, 10 3/4 x 8 inches, on one folding sheet; separations at folds, minor dampstaining; soldier's inscription above masthead: "I send you our paper, it is printed in camp, George." Tenleytown, DC, 8 March 1862

  • Notes: The Anderson Zouaves (also known as the 62nd New York Infantry Regiment) formed in June 1861, fought in Gettysburg and many other battles, and served through the end of the war; they were named after Major Robert Anderson, hero of Fort Sumter. This regimental newspaper was issued in camp shortly before they joined the Peninsular Campaign. It includes news items from camp, death notices of 3 members of the regiment, educational pieces such as "McClellan''s Bayonet Exercise" and "Military Words and Phrases Defined," and bits of humor. We have traced no other examples of this newspaper in OCLC, at auction, or elsewhere. Oddly enough, a modern newsletter by the same name has been produced by a Civil War re-enactment group in Australia. We did not previously know there were Civil War enthusiasts in Australia.
