(CIVIL WAR--NEW YORK.) To the Laboring Men of New York . . . Stop and Think! . . . Stand by the Law!

DRAFT RIOT BROADSIDE (CIVIL WAR--NEW YORK.) To the Laboring Men of New York . . . Stop and Think! . . . Stand by the Law! Letterpress broadside, 18 x 11 1/2 inches; minor foxing and mat toning, 1-inch repaired closed tear to lower edge, cleaned and restored in 2008 by Paper Conservation Studio, Inc. [New York], 18 July 1863

  • Notes: A dramatic broadside issued just days after the draft riots which devastated Manhattan. It uses a battery of arguments (and every typeface at the printer''s disposal) to show that the rioting was pointless and counter-productive: "The United States does not pay the damages, but the City of New York alone. Of course, all the disturbances, losses and damages, only fall upon our own heads. . . . Comrades! In the name of God, in the name of our wives and children, in the name of every thing that is dear to us, Stop and Think! Stand up as Democratic Workingmen should stand up before the world." Like the similar "Don''t Unchain the Tiger" broadside Swann offered two years ago, this broadside is signed "A Democratic Workingman" to appeal to the generally Lincoln-hating rioters and their sympathizers, but it was issued by Republican publisher Sinclair Tousey. Provenance: Cowan''s auction, 2017.
