(CIVIL WAR--NEWSPAPERS.) Coverage of Fort Sumter with an unusually direct "Civil War Begun" headline, in an issue of the Democratic Standard. 4 pages, 23¼ x 17½ inches, on one folding sheet; disbound, folds, minimal wear. Concord, NH, 20 April 1861

  • Notes: Every newspaper in the nation covered the Battle of Fort Sumter and its surrender, but we know of no other newspaper which spells out the matter this clearly in a front-page headline: "Civil War Begun!" This New Hampshire newspaper places the blame on abolitionists: "The Negro Question culminates in blood, as we have so long feared and so often predicted."
