(CIVIL WAR--NEWSPAPERS.) The Richmond Whig.

LEE'S SURRENDER AND THE LINCOLN ASSASSINATION (CIVIL WAR--NEWSPAPERS.) The Richmond Whig. Volume I, number 12. 8 pages, 18 x 12 inches, on one uncut sheet; Lincoln article outlined in blue pencil, foxed and worn with several short tears but no substantial loss of text. Richmond, VA, 17 April 1865

  • Notes: The Richmond Whig was originally a Confederate paper, but was relaunched by the occupying forces on 4 April 1865, the day after the surrender. In its first two weeks, the new paper covered the surrender of Lee at Appomattox and the assassination of President Lincoln. This issue offers substantial discussion of both events. The lead story is an editorial urging conciliation in the wake of the surrender, while an editorial on Lincoln appears on page 4. The paper's rather heavy-handed propagandistic tone is evident throughout: "Just as everything was happily conspiring to a restoration of tranquility under the benignant and magnanimous policy of Mr. Lincoln, comes this terrible blow."
