(CIVIL WAR--OHIO.) Hurst, Richard. An Ohio man reports upon some creative methods of draft-dodging. Autograph Letter Signed to brother, 4 pages on one sheet, moderate soiling at folds. Wellsville, OH, 2 September 1862

  • Notes: Hurst had hoped to enlist but was rejected for health reasons. At the doctor's office, he observed "the damdest set of cowards up there that you ever seen. One man sed he had the pox. The doc made him strip and he had rubed poke berries over his tool. Another one sed he had the piles. They examined him and puled a pece of liver out of him a bout five inches long. He had cut it smooth and round and stuck it in his behind."
