(CIVIL WAR.) Pair of E.W. Carryl & Co. circulars: for "Army and Navy Goods, and Camp Utensils" and for making army mittens. Illustrated ephemera, printed in red and blue; as described. Philadelphia: King & Baird, circa 1861-63


  • Notes: "Army and Navy Goods, and Camp Utensils of Every Description, Fire Arms, Swords, etc." Illustrated brochure, 4 pages (11 x 7 1/2 inches) on one folding sheet, printed in red and blue; minor foxing and wear, folds. This firm was listed in Philadelphia directories through 1863. This circular advertises an 11-piece Ennis Army Stove with built-in fry pan, grid iron, and coffee boiler intended to cook "for 75 to 100 men." Also shown are Strong's Patent Army Trunk, intended to open up for use as a cot, with a "good hair mattrass and musquito net"; camp stools and chairs; and a variety of swords.

    "Directions for Making the Army Woolen Mitten of Cloth." Illustrated broadside, 11 x 11 inches, printed in red and blue; partially trimmed for use as a stencil, folds, scrapbook mounting strip on verso. A pattern for the home production of mittens to be shipped to the front, offered gratis as a joint production of Carryl & Co. and the Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company. It bears a 30 November 1861 endorsement by Deputy Quartermaster General G.H. Crossman. An uncut copy held by the Huntington Library includes directions at the bottom, as well as a King & Baird printer's imprint.
