20 Men Wanted! To Complete Company I, Chippewa Guards.

[Philadelphia?], circa July 1861
Letterpress broadside, 17¾ x 10¾ inches; minor repairs along fold, moderate offsetting, pencil note reading "5th below Prime, Philadelphia, Pa."

  • Notes: "This regiment will go into immediate service. Pay and rations to commence as soon as enrolled. Apply within."

Newspaper reports show a "Chippewa Guards" regiment which began organizing in Philadelphia and New Jersey in early May 1861 under Colonel A.H. Seymour and Lt. Colonel Charles F. Johnson. By 24 July, James Miller was listed as commander, and the regiment was on the verge of being mustered, but we find no further mention under that name. Col. James Miller's Chippewas are described as the 37th Pennsylvania Volunteers in the 14 October 1861 Harrisburg Telegraph.
The regiment may have been renamed the 81st Pennsylvania Infantry, which was mustered in under Miller and Johnson. They served in the major battles of the Army of the Potomac through the close of the war.
