  • Notes: Beazell, Samuel W., of the three-month 12th Pennsylvania Infantry. Letter to cousin William S. Stoneman in Pittsburgh, on patriotic letterhead, discussing a large party : "There was some fourty or fifty girls at our quarters and we had a fiddle and the boys had a great time." Camp McBride, Baltimore, MD, 22 July 1861 * Holcomb, Rush, newly recruited private in the 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Letter to Hoyt and Ann Choofee(?). "The army is a dangerous plase and I sometimes think I never will live to get home. . . . It is bad to a man to have to leave his dear wife and children and go to war, but the law calls and we must go without a whine or a word." Holcomb would soon die at Fort Monroe in March 1865. Camp Cadwalader, Philadelphia, 16 September 1864 * Whiteman, George S., private in the 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Letter to wife Ruth in Genesee Forks, PA. [Near Fortress Monroe, VA], 9 May 1862 * Unsigned letter from a soldier in the 142nd Pennsylvania Infantry, about to embark on the Appomattox Campaign. "The Rebs are arming their Negroes. Our first div advanced their line of pickets yesterday and I hear find rebel Negro troops in front." Hatcher's Run, VA, 15 March [1865].
