(CIVIL WAR--PENNSYLVANIA.) Personalized service escutcheon for officer Charles W. Abbott, with related papers. Hand-decorated chromolithograph, 25 1/2 x 18 inches; slight chipping at edges, 2 tears touching printed border, uneven toning. With 10 manuscript items relating to Abbott's service, described below.   • Notes: Charles W. Abbott (1834-1908) of Allentown, PA reached the rank of lieutenant colonel in the 25th Pennsylvania Infantry. This armorial patriotic design is hand-painted with his name, rank insignia from sergeant through colonel, regimental and 19th Corps insignia, a detailed summary of his service including battles, and a Grand Army of the Republic badge. It was found in a period frame bearing the tag of the "Army and Navy Escutcheon Company" of 716 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, with a fragment of an 1883 Allentown, PA newspaper used as liner.

    Report of a guard detachment of Abbott''s company, Fort Jefferson, FL, listing troops and 12 prisoners, 12-14 October 1863.
    Pair of reports by Abbott on the battles of Sabine Cross Roads and Pleasant Hill in the Red River Campaign, 8 and 9 April 1864, describing the loss of a large percentage of the company''s knapsacks and tents from camp.
    List of soldiers(?) on 5 small disbound notebook leaves.
    1889 letter from the Treasury Department concerning Abbott''s claim for reimbursement money still due from the war.
    1897 letter requesting appointment as Allentown postmaster, describing his war service in detail.
