South Carolina and Georgia, circa 1862-84

  • Notes: Henry P. Moore (1835-1911) was a photographer from Concord, NH best known for his work in South Carolina''s Sea Islands while under Union occupation in the Civil War. 3 of these photographs were taken at Hilton Head, SC, a major Union army base for most of the war: "Slaves of Rebel Gen. T.F. Drayton" is a group shot of a few dozen freed men and women posed with a Union officer; "Nursery at Elliot''s" shows freed children in front of a plantation house; and another titled "Signal Station" shows a large plantation house repurposed as a Union Army facility. 2 were taken at the former John E. Seabrook plantation on Edisto Island, one showing his flower garden and another the mansion. Another was taken just across the border in Georgia: "Martello Tower, Tybee Island, Ga., Built in 1537 by the Spanish." No location is given for the final 2 military photos: "Forward Pivot Gun, 200 lb. Rifle, U.S. Ship Wabash" and "Gen''l Foster''s Headquarters" (captioned only in pencil). See Jeffrey Bolster''s 1999 book, "Soldiers, Sailors, Slaves, and Ships: The Civil War Photographs of Henry P. Moore."
