(CIVIL WAR--PRISON.) Dennis & Fry; photographers. Carte-de-visite of escaped prisoner Junius H. Browne. Albumen photograph, 3 3/4x 2 1/4 inches, on original mount with photographer's backmark; cancelled revenue stamp and early pencil note on verso. Cincinnati, [1865]

  • Notes: Browne was a New York Tribune journalist who made a daring escape from Salisbury Confederate Prison in December 1864. He is here shown shortly after his return to the north, apparently in his prison garb. The partnership of Dennis & Fry, which produced this photograph, lasted only from 1865 to 1866.
