INCLUDING 6 LETTERS SIGNED BY LAFAYETTE BAKER (CIVIL WAR.) Archive of Daniel S. Curtiss, Major in the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry under spymaster Lafayette Baker. 33 items, various sizes and conditions. Vp, 1862-90

  • Notes: These are the papers of an officer in the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry formed by Colonel Lafayette Baker, the famed spy who also headed the army's Secret Service. The regiment reported directly to the War Department, and functioned as Baker's personal army, mostly involved in ferreting out Confederate sympathizers in the Washington area. These papers show Baker's use of small bodies of lightly armed cavalrymen for special missions away from the front lines.
Daniel Salmon Curtiss (1814-1890) was a New Yorker who settled in Wisconsin. In 1852 he wrote "Western Portraiture, and Emigrant's Guide," still a staple in Americana auctions. In 1862, he served for a few months as a lieutenant in the 28th Wisconsin Infantry, and was then recruited as a captain in the new 1st District of Columbia Cavalry.
The collection includes 5 Autograph Letters Signed and one Letter Signed from Baker to Curtis, September and October 1863. Baker commanded the regiment largely in absentia from the Provost Department's office in the War Department in Washington. Two of his notes to Curtiss demonstrate the nontraditional way these cavalry troops were used. On 14 September 1863 he wrote: "You will send to this office immediately 20 mounted men with pistols, no sabers or carbines." Similarly, on 4 October, he wrote "You will order Lieut. Jackson with (20) twenty mounted men with one days rations (no forage), pistols and sabers only, to report at this office at five o'clock p.m. today."
Some of the other noteworthy items in this archive are: a contemporary manuscript copy of the original War Department letter authorizing Lafayette Baker to raise "four companies of cavalry for special service" as colonel, 6 May 1863 * Curtis's account with Colonel Baker on the recruiting trip to Maine, August 1863 * and two telegrams sent from Baker to Curtis in Portland, ME, 4 and 6 August 1863.
