(CIVIL WAR.) Battle of Olustee, Fla. Chromolithograph view of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment in action. 21.875 x 17.5 inches; few short marginal tears repaired. Fine, bright image. Chicago: Kurz and Allison, 1894 E1,000/1,500 Another notable battle of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, who fought so valiantly and lost their commanding officer, Robert Gould Shaw, at the 1863 Battle of Fort Wagner. Now led by General Seymour, the 54th took losses of 199 dead, 1175 wounded, while Confederates under General Finnegan lost approxi-mately 660 men, dead or wounded. Seymour successfully took Jacksonville 6 February 1864; later marched with 5000 soldiers to Olustee where, 26 February, he again met Rebel forces. After over three hours of battle with heavy losses, he was forced to retreat. [SEE ILLUSTRATION].
